Distinguishing between emotional and physical causes of mental illness can be a difficult task. Where do you draw the line between the mind and the brain?

At one time, the fields of psychiatry and neurology (the study of the brain and nervous system) were closely linked. Thanks to advances in medicine, brain imaging and molecular biology, the psychiatrists at Memorial Hospital are able to more clearly identify the brain abnormalities that often cause mental illness.

Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists are MDs who combine medical practice with practical psychology. They can diagnose and treat the physical causes of mental illness by prescribing medicines.
